What is disc golf and how to play?

    By: JoshuaComments: 0

Disc golf is currently the fastest-growing outdoor sport in the world. It is played similarly to normal golf, but instead of a ball and clubs, players use flying discs. The goal is also similar - get your disc into the hole/basket (aka "chains") in as few throws as possible. The golf discs are thrown from a specific area, often marked with a concrete pad, call a tee box or tee pad, toward a target or basket. Each basket has a set of chains that hang down in a circle, which are used to catch or slow down the golf discs, oftentimes referred to simply as "chains".

Each golf disc has a certain flight pattern and specific purpose for which it is thrown, with some being designed for long throws, short throws, and others for short putts.

As players move from hole to hole they may find a midrange disc (medium-distance) that curves hard to the left to be the ideal disc for that particular hole. As they get closer to the basket, players may throw a disc with different characteristics than the first disc thrown at the beginning of that hole. Think of it like normal golf, you may use an 8-iron to drive the ball, then a 4 wood to get closer, and lastly a putter for your final 11-foot putt. A typical disc golf course will consist of a 9-hole or 18-hole sequence, but unlike normal golf, you're very likely to be throwing around or through lots of trees, brush, and sometimes mud puddles making for an arguably more interesting game.

Disc golf is typically free to play, although there are fees for entering most tournaments. While it may not be a sport the average person is familiar with, there are HUGE tournaments and very large winning$ being paid to professional disc golfers all over the world.
